Juarez Hawkins
Juarez Hawkins (b. 1962) is an educator, artist, and curator whose work examines the evolution of identity, spirituality, and the body. A member of the Sapphire and Crystals collective, Hawkins’s work has been exhibited at the South Side Community Art Center, the Stony Island Arts Bank, the Hyde Park Art Center, Woman Made Gallery, and the Logan Center for the Arts. She received her BA from Northwestern University in Computer Studies with a concentration in art, and an MA in Interdisciplinary Arts from Columbia College Chicago. Hawkins has been awarded the Community Arts Assistance Program Grant, the Oppenheimer Teacher Incentive Grant, and the Chicago Artists Coalition Spark Microgrant.
A devoted educator, Hawkins served for nearly 16 years as a Lecturer at Chicago State University and as Co-Curator of Gallery Programs for her final six years. While at Chicago State University, she redesigned and revitalized the Black Art History course which had not been taught for a number of years. She is now a Lecturer at the School of the Art Institute. Working primarily in ceramic sculpture, mixed media collage, and assemblage, she comments on issues related to Black womanhood. Her use of recycled materials to embellish and adorn the Black women depicted in her figures reassign a sacred power to them.
In addition to being an exhibiting artist in the ReSOURCE exhibition, Juarez also serves as the Terra Foundation Engagement Fellow, working with the exhibition’s community partners.
